Kick-boxing was created by combining the principles of muay-thai and karate. The discipline developed in the 60’s, initially in Japan. In the 1970s Americans also started to develop their own strand of kick-boxing. The American variant is the “full-contact” formula, which allows punches and kicks to the head.

In 1993 the Japanese founded K-1, an organisation which promotes fights based on modified Japanese kick-boxing rules. It is the most prestigious kick-boxing organisation in the world.
