The Polish Postal Service has launched a stamp for the European Universities Games Łódź 2022. It is available in post offices across the country since Friday 15th of July in an edition of more than 120.000 pieces. The stamps will also be available at several points of sale located on Łódź student campuses, while keeping in mind athletes from all around Europe.

The stamp features the official mascot of the European Universities Games (EUG 2022) in Łódź – EUGenio the unicorn. The author of the project is Tomasz Wochna – the graphic designer from the organising committee of the Games at the Sports Departement of the Łódź University of Technology. It is this university that is the main organiser of the event, together with the Academic Sports Association and the city of Łódź.

The commemorative stamp on the occasion of the Unviversity Games will not only be available at post offices across the country. Keeping in mind the athletes from nearly 40 European countries coming to Łódź, points of sale of the Polish Postal Service will be at disposal on the campuses of the Łódź University of Technology and the University of Łódź. There, participants will be able to buy stamps (price: 8 PLN) and stick them on postcards they received in their athletes kits to send to their loved ones. The EUG 2022 stamp was presented during a press conference at the Geyer Garden in Łódź, where beach sports will be held during the Games.

“European University Games in Łódź is an extremely ambitious event with a broad organisational dynamic. And it is precisely such valuable topics that are important and worthy of being immortalised on commemorative stamps”, said Lucyna Prygiel-Augustyniak, Director of the Regional Polish Post Network in Łódź.

The 2022 European University Games in Łódź will begin on the 17th of July with a grand opening ceremony, during which several thousand athletes will parade with their country’s flag. Around 5,000 participants from the Old Continent will compete at the Łódź Games in 20 disciplines such as football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, beach sports (volleyball and handball), karate and judo. The student-athletes’ competition will last two weeks. EUG Łódź 2022 will be the largest multisport event in the world.

“ I wish everyone a fantastic experience. I wish the athletes a wonderful competition and may they remember that sport is also about having fun. And those who are able to enjoy themselves can appreciate this sport the most”, commented Krzysztof Jóźwik, Rector of the Łódź University of Technology.

And the emotions won’t fail during the EUG 2022. The sport level at the Games also promises to be high.

“There is a saying that people are remembered by the way they make you feel, and it is for these positive feelings that it is worthwhile to be here”, points out Aleksandra Bednarek, the world’s best open water swimmer and a student of the Łódź University of Technology.
The hosts’ medal hope at the Games is Jan Kałusowski, a multiple medallist at the Polish swimming championships.

“I can’t hide the fact that the season has been demanding, but I will give it my all and reach the best possible result. All the more so because I am competing at home”, said Kałusowski.

Commemorative stamps are issued to honour outstanding personalities, to recall events particularly important to the Polish nation and to commemorate cultural and sporting events. They were issued, among others, for the XXIV Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022 and the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo.
