Rules

Volleyball consists in hitting the ball with any part of the body (most often with the hands) so that it passes over the net and touches the opponent’s half of the court. The volleyball court is a rectangle measuring 18 by 9 meters.

Each team is allowed 3 hits to return the ball to their opponents. Points can be earned in many ways. The primary way to score a point is to bring the ball to the ground in the opponent’s half. A point may still be earned in the event that the ball lands out of bounds and the opponent touches it last. The game continues until one of the teams wins 3 sets. Each set is played to score 25 points, with an advantage of at least two points. If each team scores 2 points – a tie-break (decisive set) is played. In this set, players play up to 15 points.

History

The official founder of the discipline is William G. Morgan, a physical education teacher from Massachusetts. The premiere demonstration of the game of volleyball took place on February 9, 1895.

In 1947, the International Volleyball Federation was established during the Congress in Paris. In 1949 the first Men’s World Championships were organized, and in 1952 the Women’s World Championships. Volleyball has been an Olympic sport since 1964.
