Rules

Opponents have sets of figures in different colours. Each set includes sixteen figures: a king, a queen two bishops, two knights, two rooks and eight pawns. The value of the figures can be absolute or relative. If we assume that the absolute value is 1, the relative values of the figures are most often: queen – 9 points; rook – 5 points; bishop – 3 points; knight – 3 points.

The game always starts with the white pieces, and the players take turns. If a piece enters an occupied square, according to the rules of movement for that piece, it captures the opponent’s piece. The “check” is a threat to capture the king, which must be averted in the next move (the king cannot be captured). “Checkmate” occurs when the opponent’s king is in check and there’s no legal way to get it out of check.

History

Chess probably comes from India. According to historical sources, this game was known in Persia in the 1970s. VI century. Over time, this game became popular in Europe, especially in Italy and Spain. In the Renaissance era, the first chess textbooks appeared. In 1886, the first official match for the world title was played between the Polish chess player Johannes Zukertort and the Prague-born Wilhelm Steinitz. Steinitz won the duel and became the first world chess champion.

Over 100 years ago Lodz had one of the strongest chess teams in Europe. The local chess association was represented by, among others, Henryk Salwe or Akiba Rubinstein. Samuel Reszewski, a chess grandmaster, also came from the region. Poland won the Hamburg Chess Olympiad in 1930.

Stanisław Ulam, a Polish scientist, was a co-author of the first chess computer program.
