Rules

A type of volleyball played on sand. The game is determined by the terrain. The competition takes place outdoors, with the added difficulty of the ball’s flight path being affected by the wind.

The playing field is rectangular and measures 16 by 8 meters. The playing area must be prepared on sand free of stones, shells and other objects that may cause an injury. The net is at a height of 2.43 meters (male) or 2.24 meters (female). The ball is made of a different material to the indoor ball and has less pressure inside.

The team consists of two players. The match is played up to 21 points. The winning team must have an advantage of two points. The ball can be hit with any part of the body.

History

In 1915, a group of friends marked the pitch and set up a net on one of the Hawaiian beaches. Then the first beach volleyball match was played. At the end of the 1920s, In the 1980s, the first beach volleyball club, “Santa Monica Beach Club”, was established.   Beach volleyball has been an Olympic discipline since 1996, and the Beach Volleyball World Championships have been held since 1997.

The first match in history was played on water, on a court placed in the middle of a lake. The first Polish (men’s) championship was held in Poland in 1994. The women’s tournament premiered two years later. The World Senior Men and Senior Women Championships were held in Poland in 2013. It was an extremely successful year for Poles. They won medals at the Universiade, Grand Slam, CEV European Championship Masters.  The successes of the Poles in this discipline include a long list of medals of every kind, in every age category, and at practically every international tournament.
